Detailed description of Birkdale Golf Club

Birkdale Golf Club is a Public, 18 hole golf course located in Huntersville, North Carolina.

Birkdale first opened for play in 1997. The course was designed by Arnold Palmer.

The course has a number of elevation changes and was carved out of a forest with tall pines. The course also challenges with water hazards. #5, a 569 yard par-5, requires a third shot that must carry water over a rock-faced wall to a long, narrow green.

Par for the course is 72. From the back tees, the course plays to 7,013 yards. From the forward tees, the course measures 5,175 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 13, a par-5 that plays to 595 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 2, a par-3 that plays to 158 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 9, a 452-yard par-4 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole at Birkdale Golf Course is # 10, a 334 yard par-4.

Headed down here to escape the Michigan chill for a long weekend in the 50's. Always look forward to playing a Arnold Palmer course (1997) for its conditions and toughness. The previous rainy conditions made it cart path only as fairways were soggy at best, with no roll. Without having cart GPS and limited path markers, it made for a LONG day on club selection. With four (4) yardages from Reds 5,175/117/66.3 up to Gold 7,013/143/74.4 the Blues I chose at 3,229/3,256 / 135 / 71.7 played very challenging today on this Par 36/36 layout. Great hole layouts with well placed fairway/greenside traps (wet/heavy) to go with the narrow landing areas. They also have about nine (9) holes that water comes into play with photo above of #5 a 569yd Par 5 Hcp 3 ready to make that 3rd shot a lot tougher. Of these, four (4) holes have water in front of the green to contend with, so choose wisely. The Par 4 #9 452-325yds is their Hcp 1 hole and mostly of the narrow approach, with a green to match. The #13 at 595-390yd Par 5 protects its Hcp 2 with water on RH side and a creek crossing in front of the green. The #18 hole Par 4 at 436-328yds Hcp 6 has the toughest 2nd shot to a 3-sided water guarded green that I've ever seen. The only course conditions that I was disappointed in were the greens as they had no fringe and rough edges. The greens on the other hand, rolled true and fast despite of the soggy conditions. Ended up shooting 42/41 w/34 putts and would like to play again in dryer conditions.

Would travel: 30-60 Miles, Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again, Average course for the area, Fair priced based on quality and competitive area pricing

Day 64 - 100 days, 100 courses (Thursday, May 16, 2019)

When I got to the club there was still dew on the greens and the sun was in my eyes for the first few holes. But sunspots could not hide the beauty of the Arnold Palmer design.

It did feel like a day at the beach as I managed to hit 6 traps during the round including the 18th which was very intimidating with water in the other side of the green.

Shot and 82 and ended up losing yesterday’s lucky ball.

Would travel: 30-60 Miles, Not Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again
